Fayetteville is rich in history and natural beauty. It offers a multitude of activities from sports, museums, festivals, shopping, dining out and lots more, too much to mention.

Fayetteville is home to one of the countries' largest military installations, which provides a wonderful diversity of cultures.

Some History

Lots of towns have been named after war heroes, and Fayetteville was the first town to get its name from the revolutionary war hero Marquis De Lafayette. This was the only town he actually visited.

In 1789, the University of North Carolina, America's oldest state university, was chartered in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville's Great Fire in 1831, which destroyed many buildings, was more devastating than the 1871 Chicago Fire or the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.


Museums



There are many museums in Fayetteville-military, art, children's and more. There is something for everyone.

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum
This is a wonderful museum showing the work done by the Military. The museum is informative with some wonderful life like displays.

Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex
This museum has fascinating exhibits from early North Carolina life. It shows Native American culture through the European settlement the civil war and more. Children can enjoy the children's museum on Green Street.





Shopping

The Cross Creek Mall offers 1.2 million sq. ft of shopping. There are four major department stores and more than 100 stores, so you are sure to find what you are looking for.

There are many shopping centers spread out over Fayetteville. Whether it is gardening, clothes, building supplies, cars or furniture, you should be able to find it in Fayetteville.

Near by in Smithville there are more than 70 name-brand manufacturer's outlets. Smithville is about 1 hour north on I95. For furniture be sure to visit High Point North Carolina which is approx 1 1/2 hour away and you will be sure to have GREAT savings. I have personally shopped there for many things.(It was worth the trip)




Military

Fort Bragg is the world's largest airborne facility with more than 45,000 military personnel. It is home to the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps. By population, Fort Bragg is the largest Army installation in the world. Fort Bragg covers approximately 160,700 acres that offer 7 major drop zones, 4 impact areas, 16 live fire maneuver areas and 2 Army fields. There is approximately 20 million square feet of office buildings, a major medical center, 11 churches, 11 miles of railroad lines, 8 schools, 28 restaurants and also provides housing for over 11,000 family members.The US Army Parachute team, the Golden Knights, is also resident at Fort Bragg. You can enjoy the breath taking sight of paratroopers falling through the air.

Pope Field was established by the war department in 1919 and is one of the oldest installations in the Air Force. Pope is home to the 43rd Airwing lift. These two squadrons of C130's can deploy people, equipment and supplies anywhere in the world at a moment's notice. Also Pope plays host to the 23rd fighter Group; they fly A10's in close support missions.

Festivals

Fayetteville is a town that enjoys hosting numerous festivals. Dogwood Festival Fort Bragg Fair, River Show, Pope AFB/ Fort Bragg joint open house and Air Show, Country Fest, International Folk Festival, Oktoberfest Internationale, Christmas Craftsmen's Festival, to name but a few.


Education

Fayetteville State University was the first school in the south for African-Americans. Today it is part of the University of North Carolina and has over 4000 enrolled undergraduates, masters and doctoral degree programs.

Methodist College has more than 1800 students from all over the world. It offers a variety of degree programs.

Fayetteville Technical Community College is North Carolina's second largest community college and offers certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in over 60 programs.


Sport and Fun

Fayetteville has many different sports to offer, whether you enjoy watching or playing. You can go climbing at The Climbing Place, 436 Russell Street. Putt-putt originated here, so why not test your skill, Putt-putt Golf and Games off Owen Drive. Auto racing-we can enjoy drag racing and stack car racing on a 0.4 oval clay track at the Fayetteville Motor Sports Park, Doc Bennett Road. Soccer is another popular sport around Fayetteville, Fayetteville Soccer Association at Tree Top Drive. If it is water sports, then there are several water parks around. Fantasy Lake (Hope Mills), Lake Pines (Lake Pines Drive), Smith Lake (Fort Bragg), Waldo's Beach (Waldo's Road). I hope you have fun getting wet. Professional Hockey can be seen during the hockey session when the Fayetteville Force is in action on the ice. There are more sports to mention-tennis, fishing, horseback riding, golf, but it would be impossible to tell you about them all. If you play it, it's in Fayetteville somewhere!
